ASDA To Start Selling DVD Players For Less Than A Tenner

Monday, January 29th, 2007 at 13:21 by Simon Kimber

If, like me, you are somewhat of a home cinema aficionado then you may well have shared my amazement a few years ago when, for the first time, you could actually buy a DVD player for less than £100.

They were elusive, required some internet bargain hunting and you had to live with the fear that they might not have survived the fall out of the back of a lorry. But, all going well, that hard earned £99.99 was your ticket into the new-fangled world of DVD and it’s audio/visual wonders.

Now obviously all these things come down in price, as demand increases and manufacturing costs fall, but at a certain point it just gets silly. ASDA have got silly.

The UK supermarket chain, owned by US giants WalMart, have put on sale 80,000 DVD players for the ridiculously low price of £9. That’s right, £9. Nine. Pounds. Sterling. Not ninety. Not nineteen. NINE.

These £9 DVD players are produced by that household name in consumer electronics… erm… Durabrand…

BUT THEY’RE NINE POUNDS! That’s less than pretty much any of the actual DVDs in their chart. I feel almost obliged to go and buy one just because it’s only £9. I really don’t want or need another DVD player, but it’s £9 and there’s an alarm in my head going “Bargain Alert! Bargain Alert!” compelling me to get in the car, drive to my nearest ASDA and buy one. Or two. Or ten. They’re £9!

I have no idea what I’d use them for. Not for watching DVDs, they’re probably rubbish, but I’m sure I can come up with something. Door stops maybe, occasional seating, some sort of DVD Player skittles game, hell, it would probably be a cheaper way of re-tiling my bathroom.

Oh. They’ve all gone.

    NINE POUNDS!

Oh bugger. Does that mean poor people will be able to watch DVD now? I shall have to go buy a BlueRay and HD player now so I can brag about them.

    Or get the Betamax out.

Maybe we will be seeing these adorning the dash boards on Novas all over the country as they all boast of having in car DVD!!!
