Home Office fails to record details of 27,500 criminals

Wednesday, January 10th, 2007 at 14:21 by Stephen Ball

The Home Secretary John Reid has promised a full enquiry into the latest Home Office ‘blunder’. 15 European countries sent his department the details of UK citizens who committed crimes abroad, but these details stayed in paper files and were never put onto the police computer system.

Criminals, who could have served time for murder, rape or sexual offences against children overseas, have not been highlighted as unsafe to work in jobs with vulnerable groups when they returned to the UK. There are thought to be at least 29 paedophiles, 25 rapists, 3 attempted-rapists and 17 other sex offenders on the list. It is not yet known if they have applied for jobs in the UK.

The department knew about the mistake last May, but John Reid only just found out about it. That’s alright - he didn’t know that five illegal immigrants were working as cleaners in the Immigration Office last year, and doesn’t have a clue how many of the accidentally-released prisoners are still at large, so he’s probably a busy man.

Questions are being asked about whether he’ll have to resign over the incident. The last two people to hold the job had to resign in disgrace, so it must be quite a smooth process by now.
