Pope Benny at the Crossroads

Monday, September 18th, 2006 at 10:26 by Stephen Giles

Faced with the choice between outright warfare between two of the largest and most pervasive organised religions in the world and issuing a humbling apology for his ill-advised stab at ‘book-learning’, Pope Benedict XVI took a well-travelled step back from the brink by saying sorry for winding up Muslims across the globe.

The pontiff used his traditional Sunday address to qualify the comments he made late last week, during which he had recited an ancient text which referred to the spread of Islam as ‘evil and inhuman’. Today, the pope said that the text was quoted as an ‘invitation to respectful dialogue.’

Oh right. Well now you’ve put it like that, we’re sure everything will be just fine.
