Dell Earnings Go Up In Smoke

Friday, August 18th, 2006 at 10:44 by Simon Kimber

Computer giant Dell announced their second quarter earnings today and the figures aren’t pretty.  $500 million dollars have disappeared down the back of a sofa somewhere with profits plummeting 51% from the $1.02 billion they achieved in the same period last year.

The company’s accounting is currently under investigation by regulators and the recent recall by Dell of over 4 million Sony-supplied laptop batteries, at an estimated cost of anywhere between $200 million and $400 million, can’t have helped either.

Apparently buyers weren’t too keen on the added “Randomly exploding fire-bombâ?¢” feature, favouring a more conventional laptop that isn’t going to burst into flames without warning.
