Cole left out of Arsenal squad

Friday, August 18th, 2006 at 16:06 by Adam Williams

Arsenal and England left-back Ashley Cole has been left out of Arsenal’s squad for their opening match of the season tomorrow against Aston Villa, fuelling yet more speculation that he is heading out of the door to Chelsea.

Of course, it’s not the fans - or the manager - that are the problem: “I maintain I have no problem with the fans and the manager. They’ve been very supportive of me.” The answer comes, perhaps, in this: “I hope the fans understand where my grievances lie“, and where he posted his statement - on his agent’s website.

So an oh-so-subtle slight at the club, then, for not offering him enough money? It would seem so. The stakes have been raised, then, and perhaps it is a matter of if, not when, Cole gets to gorge at the Chelsea trough.
