Telling It Like It Is

Thursday, August 17th, 2006 at 19:25 by Stephen Ball

John Prescott described George Bush’s performance in the Middle East as “crap”, it was revealed today.

I was a little confused when I read on page two of this morning’s paper that he had used “the c-word” to describe Bush. It was impressive and somewhat cheering, until I realised that his actual description had been much tamer.

All the newspapers are rushing to point out that Prescott is a diplomatic disaster area, but I don’t think that’s true. For a start, if these are his real feelings about the President then he’s been completely loyal to Tony Blair by not saying anything publicly for all this time - even this quote was from a private meeting. More than that, though, his comment can only make him more popular with the majority of voters in the UK (and indeed the World) where the natural response is surely “…well, yes.”

Prescott followed up by saying that Bush was “just a cowboy with his Stetson on”, but modestly continued “I can hardly talk about that can I?”
