Dolphins â??not intelligentâ?? claims scientist.

Thursday, August 17th, 2006 at 20:19 by RJ Barker

Paul Manger of Johannesburg’s University of Witwatersrand tells us that all that ‘the â??dolphinâ??s being really quite brightâ?? idea is nothing more than hokum.

The Professor even dares the ire of new-age, aquatic mammal huggers the world over by suggesting dolphins only get stuck in nets because they are thick. “If they were really intelligent they would just jump over the net because it doesn’t come out of the water.” Mr Manger tells us that although we equate the large brain with intelligence itâ??s actually an evolutionary development to counter the thermal changes of being a mammal in water.

Although prospective Dolphin eaters the world over may jump on this idea they will still have to get over the fact the non-fishy creatures remain damnably cute. Iâ??m afraid chowing down on a medium rare Dolphin steak in your local TGI Fridayâ??s probably remains a long way off.

No Dolphins were available for comment at the time of writing, presumably they were all too busy watching Big Brother.
